Officials are redrawing the boundaries of Flavor Country — the fictional place TV’s Marlboro cigarette cowboys inhabited before dying of smoking-related illnesses — at Pasadena City College.
The PCC Board of Trustees last week voted 4-3 to restrict smoking on campus to just five designated areas, including one at the Community Education Center on Foothill Boulevard. Opposition came from three board members who sought to ban smoking on campus entirely, rather than adhere to a stepped approach that would render PCC a smoke-free campus in 2010.
In addition to embracing the inevitable, enacting an all-out ban now would have averted the cost of new signs needed to identify the smoking areas, said Trustee Connie Rey Castro, who voted against the stepped approach.
“It seems to me we could save $1,000 if we go to a smoke-free campus,” Castro said.
Board President Jeanette Mann and Trustee Beth Wells-Miller also sought an immediate ban.
