Blues harp lovers are in for a treat Saturday when Masters of the West Coast Harp, featuring harp masters Rod Piazza, John Clifton and Billy Watson, along with surprise guests, stop in Arcadia Blues Club.
All three artists boast long histories on the blues scene. When Piazza isn’t performing with Saturday’s threesome he heads up Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers (themightyflyers.com). The blues veteran is also heralded as one of the world’s top harmonica players. He’s now been performing longer than his mentors, which include George “Harmonica” Smith. From his initial effort in 1967 with The Dirty Blues Band to multiple W.C. Handy Awards, Piazza’s become a blues legend himself.
Starting in 1980, Central California native Clifton (johncliftonmusic.com) gained fame with the MoFo Party Band, and has gone on to headline and perform at major blues festivals in the US, Europe, Fiji and New Zealand and garnering numerous awards throughout his career.
Besides performing solo, Watson (billywatson.com) works with the International Silver String Submarine Band, an improvisational all-star cast of musicians, with a revolving cast of players handpicked from the California music scene.
Watson, a high-energy front man with inspiring vocals and musical expertise, is known for delivering a blues show that is infectiously funny and convincing. He’s also worked with numerous noted artists.
Music starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at Arcadia Blues Club, 16 E. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Call (626) 447-9349 or visit arcadiabluesclub.com.
