From its beginnings in Phoenix to its San Francisco-based stardom, theatrical rock band The Tubes, playing Friday at The Rose in Pasadena, has broken the musical mold with its wild approach.

Fronted by lead singer Fee Waybill, their organized insanity put the spectacle in performance. Waybill was known for creating characters onstage, including memorable caricatures like glam-rocker Quay Lude and punk parody Johnny Bugger. The group scored early-on with the late 1970s smash, “White Punks on Dope.” The theatrics only increased when videos became the norm, as with the early 1980s hit “She’s A Beauty,” which blasted the band into international legitimacy.

The Tubes are still out there preaching the gospel of onstage mayhem. Fee and the boys visit Pasadena in the midst of a national tour.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and The Tubes start at 9 p.m. Friday at The Rose, 245 E. Green St., Pasadena. Tickets are $28 to $54. Call (888) 645-5006 or visit
