South Pasadena’s Firefly Bistro not only serves great food, but it’s also a pretty hot entertainment venue, especially during Sunday’s Blues Brunch, when Barry “Big B” Brenner sits in with his acoustic guitar.
Nearly every weekend — sometimes Saturdays as well as Sundays — Brenner, who is from Chicago’s South Side, historically one of the country’s top blues incubators, finds time in his busy gigging schedule to satisfy Firefly’s music-hungry diners.
Performing since he was in grade school, the self-taught Brenner is now perhaps best known as old-school, performing solo country folk blues, along with music from the Mississippi Delta, the Louisiana bayous and, naturally, Chicago.
A lifelong proponent of finger-style, bottleneck-slide and Ragtime guitar picking, Brenner plays six-string, 12-string and National Resonator guitars and has backed up some greats of the genre, including Albert King and Eric Burdon.
If the blues are your thing, Brenner is the real deal.
lues Brunch runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Firefly Bistro, 1009 El Centro St., South Pasadena. Call (626) 441-2443.
