Three for one
Blackwell, Michael and Sokolow join forces at Coffee Gallery
By John Sollenberger 05/03/2012
Catch a fabulous threesome Friday when Kenny Blackwell, Dorian Michael and Fred Sokolow join up for a show at Coffee Gallery Backstage.
The duo of Blackwell and Michael are known for playing whatever moves them. Whether it’s jazz, old-time blues, Celtic or Brazilian, they play it all with style and panache. Mandolinist and guitarist Blackwell (kennyblackwell.com) moved to LA in 1993, when he hooked up with fiddler Richard Green. He went on to perform with the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, and his work has been featured on a variety of TV and movie scores.
Guitarist Michael (dorianmichael.com) has performed in just about every style and situation one can imagine. He spent many years playing electric, honky-tonk guitar before moving into the current project with Blackwell and has made a name for himself playing finger-style guitar.
Guitarist and banjo player Sokolow (sokolowmusic.com) has spanned genres including pop, folk and jazz and conducts seminars in both instruments. He’s produced several CDs and has played gigs ranging from Harrah’s to McCabe’s, performing with acts including Bobbie Gentry, Jim Stafford, Tom Paxton and The Limelighters.
This promises to be a night of serious musicianship.
Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Tickets are $15. Call (626) 798-6236 or visit coffeegallery.com.
